Our beloved Elaine Viets had a stroke last night at 9 pm. She is just out of surgery. Elaine_2

The good news is that the doctors expect her to recover, and she will be able to write again. However, she has a long tough recovery road ahead of her.

Her husband Don and the Tarts are asking you for positive thoughts and prayers. We will keep you posted here on the blog as we know additional facts in order to avoid confusion.

If you'd like to send her a message, please post it here, and we'll make sure she gets them.

I am so sorry, my thoughts are with you and your family. Let me know if you want any St. Louis delicacies sent your way. Bissinger's chocolates ships well, I don't think Ted Drewes would survive the trip.

We love you, Elaine. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Heartbreaking news, but Elaine is so tough and so much a fighter, I can't imagine anything slowling her down for too long. Our prayers and good wishes are with her and her family.

I'm so sorry to hear this news. I know you have the strength and humor to carry you through therapy. I'd say you were too young for this, but I know it can hit all ages. It happened to a student in my Am. Lit. class, age 16 -- we excused her from much of her course work, so perhaps you should also be excused from all responsibilities, the better to concentrate on recovery. Hugs!

Praying. Hard.

Going to re-read your books to hear your 'voice'. Too much joy and wit and life to keep quiet. So until you're back here with us, that'll do.

If there's one thing I know for certain, it's that Elaine is one hell of a fighter. We'll keep good thoughts going, and wish her the speediest of recoveries.

Elaine, so many of us love you and are pulling for you. Heal.

Elaine - I, like all your loyal readers, will wait for you to get back to good health. We'll eagerly anticipate your next book. So don't worry about a thing. Just try your best to get well.

In the meantime, I'm missing a few books from Elaine's funny repetoire. How about we show Elaine some support by buying one of her books today!

My good thoughts and prayers are coming your way as well as well as the firm belief you will come through this stronger than ever. God bless you and your family.

Sarah...my thoughts exactly. I can think of at least two I haven't read, so B&N here I come!

What everyone is also wishing: that you are up and healthy and going strong soon.

Hope you are up and about and back to your self soon, Elaine. I know it will be a long hard road, but if anyone can do it, it's you. Sending healthy thoughts and prayers your way. If you need anything from the south, give me a holler!

I'm echoing the sentiments already expressed, healing thoughts and prayers heading to you Elaine. Concentrate on getting better and we'll be here when you're ready. In the meantime, I agree with Sarah and others, Murder Unleashed just jumped to the head of my to be read pile. Hugs and best wishes.

Elaine, my prayers and love are with you.
You will get better and quickly I'm sure. Your former nun-teachers who have gone to their award will be stormng the throne of God. They want you with them....but not yet. And we want you right here so we can read more books that you write.

Elaine, sending you and your family thoughts and prayers for every good thing.

Elaine, you're in my thoughts and prayers.

Elaine and Don, please know you are both near and dear in my thoughts and prayers today, and in the days to come.

Holding on for you, Elaine, until you feel up to it again.

CJ :) also beaming strength to Don!

I also know that it happens to the young. My daughter suffered a stroke while she was being born. I know you will pull through and bring us even more wonderful, funny books to laugh over and enjoy. God bless you and your family.

Yes, many wishes for a full recovery. Step by step, day by day, it can be done.

Thanks for all your work on the Edgars program.

Elaine--you have a world of sisters, fans and friends. All of us are sending the most powerful wishes and hopes for you.

I can't get your "voice" out of my head..and we all hope to hear it again--soon---strong and vital and healthy.

This is a time to be very brave. And that's what you are. We all love you dearly. And we are all thinking of you.

Elaine - my thoughts, prayers, and theraputic e-hugs go out to you and your family. With your strength and determination, and the loving support of those around you, I have no doubt that you'll be back in no time.
Two years ago, I, and other NE Patriots fans were heartbroken when Tedy Bruchi had a stroke at the age of 31. Not only did he recover, but he went on to play again, missing a chance at a fourth Super Bowl by just one game (damn that Peyton Manning ;))
We love you. Heal. We'll wait.

Oops - that's 'Bruschi' - I can't believe I misspelled it. My Great Dane is named Bruschi. It's a sickness - I know. Now, I'm going to head over to Amazon and order some of Elaine's books.

Elaine -- Take care and get well soon. Lots of people are thinking about you!

Although I've read and loved TLC since the beginning, it took this to bring me out of lurkdom.

All the best to you and Don as you fight the good fight, Elaine--lots of people are rooting for you.

Elaine, my thoughts and prayers join the many, many others speeding their way to you and your family. Get well.

Best wishes to Elaine and her family. I hope you're feeling better soon.

I am so sorry to hear about Elaine. I'll be sending positive thoughts and good wishes her way.

Like everyone, I'm sending you thoughts and prayers, Elaine. I'll miss your humor and wit, but it will be all the more precious when we have the blessing of enjoying it again. Meanwhile, if you need Virginia peanuts, you know who to call :) Hugs to you and all your family . . .

Elaine you are so in my prayers, I wish you a speedy recovery.

Well, this just stinks. Elaine, you and Don will be in our prayers. I know you'll be back strong as ever, and we'll all be pulling for you!

Elaine...our thoughts, prayers and love are with you and Don..."when the going gets tough, the tough get going"...hang in there, girl!
Carol Jose and all your MWA friends up here in Brevard County, FLA...can you FEEL THE LOVE?

Shocked and like everyone, am here for you, Elaine...thanks tarts for the updates...keep them coming.

My very best wishes for a full and speedy recovery, and I hope it isn't long before your pen hits the page again.

I am so very very sorry to hear about Elaine, but the fact that she will get better and will write again are heartening. I know what it takes to recover from serious illness and my thoughts and heart will be with her while she wins this fight as well.

I met Elaine at the NAL dinner at Bouchercon and found her to be just as smart, funny, likeable and warm as she is on the printed page (and screen) -- and that's saying a lot! My thoughts and prayers go out to you, Elaine. And I hope your recovery is a very, very fast one.

Recovery is a long road, it's true. But as much laughter and joy as Elaine has brought to all of us, I know it will come back her way to help her through.

Elaine, if you and yours need anything, you know you have but to ask. So many of us here are pulling for you. We'd take on your burden if we could.

I'm saddened to hear about Elaine's stroke. I pray she makes a complete and speedy recovery! Thanks for keeping all her fans posted on her condition.

All best wishes for Elaine, one of the true greats of the mystery world, and her husband Don. My heart is with you.

My thoughts and prayers are with you, Elaine, as you start on your path towards recovery.

When things seem tough, just remember all of us who are pulling for you!

Elaine, I’m wishing you a speedy recovery and I hope your path to the top of this mountain isn’t too difficult. Keep in mind, the view from the top of the mountain is spectacular and worth all your efforts to reach the peak. We’re all pulling for ya, Lady!

Elaine, sending you all the healing vibes, prayers and thoughts I can from Boston, MA. I've been keeping tabs on you via TLC (and Nancy and Sarah, too.) You have a strong support network - now is the time to let them support. :)

Love, hugs and best wishes from Boston,
Abby T.

Elaine, I believe you will have a complete recovery and you'll probably inspire us all when you
write about it, another challenging "job".
Hang in there!

Elaine, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Hang in there.

See -- I'm really pullin' hard for you from Boston! I managed a double post! (Silly work computer!)

Thinking of you today and will continue to do so in the coming weeks.

Off to buy some of your books today.

Elaine and Don--all the best to both of you. I remember Elaine's recent posting on the joint decision with Don regarding a book tour while Don was undergoing some medical treatment. I was impressed by the power of your partnership. I hope you will draw strength from one another, and from knowing that we are all rooting for you and keeping you in our thoughts and prayers.

Elaine and Don, wishing y'all well. This of course, is an understatement. I trust that family and friends - combined with your strong sense of humor and strength of character will help you during this period.

Cats and chocolate could be essential to your recovery, so make sure you have a good supply of both on hand. If I can help with the chocolate or with some books, let me know.

Elaine, you're the best. What a trooper you were in Tulsa. Thinking of you and hoping you feel better soon.
L. A. Starks

My deep - and sincere - wishes for your speedy recovery, Elaine.

You're at the top of my prayer list - so hurry up and get well. It's a long list and my memory isn't as good as it used to be.

Elaine, You're in my prayers and please know I am at your side while you go through recovery. You are a strong woman, a gifted author and a wonderful friend.
Hugs and much love
Pamela James in Kansas

Please let Elaine know I'm keeping her in my prayers. Should appeared for me twice at the Lee County Reading Festival, and she was always so gracious in appearing, and kind in asking other authors to appear. I pray she is able to regain complete health and strength over time. I hope her humor and wit will help her in what will probably be a tough battle.

Elaine and Don -- Kick this thing's ass. You've been through so much, and you both always come back.

Hang in there, Elaine and Don! A lot of people are pulling for you both, and I'm one of them.

Hope your recovery is swift and robust - So get well soon as I know you will triumph over this adversity -

Thoughts for you from the other side of the Atlantic / Best Wishes

Elaine I am thinking of you, remembering our celebration of your Anthony in that crowded bar, then just last week hearing how excited you were about your rave review in Publisher's Weekly. You are one the kindest people I have met and your strong spirit will carry you through this. Your talent is needed, so fight hard my friend. My thoughts are with you and your family.

You are in my prayers!

O my dear Amiga!
Fight. Fight hard.
My thoughts and love and best wishes for your swift and complete recovery are with you. And I'm sending an extra dose of strength for Don.
Ordering all of your books to give away randomly this week.

Elaine, you've got everyone -- writers, readers, and online sisters -- rooting for you!

Elaine, you have so many people pulling for you! I hope you can tap into our collective strength and use it to speed your recovery. I'm looking forward to snarking with you over a cup of coffee soon.

Don, take care of yourself, too.

Elaine, you've got a world of people praying for you and sending the best thoughts possible you're way. Hang on, sweetie! And don't hesitate to ask for what you need.

Don, you, too. Being the caretaker can be even harder than being sick. Take care of yourself, or you won't be able to take care of Elaine. And again, ask for anything you need.

OH, Elaine, Elaine, Elaine, we are praying for you and for Don. Hang on to the strength you've always had and you will get through this is record time.

Elaine you are in my prayers. Tough road ahead but you are a tough tart and I know you will be okay. Your friend from cozyarmchair, Glenda.

Elaine and Don,
You are in my thoughts and prayers......so much so I just went to mass and lit a candle........that alone would make Elaine sit up and notice!
You are a strong and loving pair who can do this again, I just know it.
We will have Elaine's books at the Festival for her fans as we planned. Their love and support will rush your way too. We will all miss you but know your job right now is to get better and back to the writing you love.

I recently learned that folks who invite you to ask for anything really mean it. Please let me know if there's anything I can do for the PR Plan we worked on together.

Love and Hugs......dinner at Doc's soon.

Mary Alice, Richard and Mystery Lovers

PS My white count today was perfect so you don't have to call. Elaine, YOU have to get better soon.

I was too timid to march up and introduce myself to you at last year's Malice. Next year for sure! Heal fast, Elaine!

Elaine, I told you I wouldn't be staying in any of the same hotels you were planning on being in this summer. I promise!!
Warmest thoughts and heartfelt prayers to you and your family.

Elaine, you have my very best wishes. If you didn't already know how many people love and admire you, I'm sure you're discovering that now.

My very best wishes to you, now and always. I still laugh every time I think of your "Make me a Democrat!" story--and so many others. I know that your humor and spirit, along with all the thoughts and prayers of those who care about you will speed you toward a perfect recovery.

Elaine: Leslie and I send our love to you and Don, and please know you're in our prayers and thoughts. We know your strength and determination will get you through this.

I'll definitely be buying those of your books I don't yet have, so I can be all ready for the next one when you recover.

Good luck. We are all pulling for you to come through better than you were originally. Another life experience to draw from in your writing.

All the best for a swift, complete recovery. From the looks of it here at Lipstick, you've got a lot of support behind you!

Be strong and get well, Elaine. You are in my deepest thoughts and prayers.

Dear Don - see all these names? These good people are just one of the communities that care about you both and support you both. Take merciless advantage of us, please, even if you hate to ask.
